Some or maybe most of you probably bought some cheap laptop with an Intel Integrated Card. Mostly x3100, and you thought that it can't play any games above 2005. There is one solution to that: Modded Drivers and Software Vertex Processing Mode.First of all, Modded Drivers. Right now, my x3100 is codenamed "Razer Adrasteia FX19". It even shows the name on DxDiag and other software, it's pretty funny naming that to an integrated card. How? first of all, modded drivers are basically an optimized version of the default (factory) drivers, it's like setting a game's settings to high or ultra high. There are various codes to work with, usually with the igdlh.inf file, it contains all of the video card's settings. Like how much memory it will use, what's the name of the video card, and etc. A handful of teams nowadays are currently making these Modded Drivers for the Intel x3100 and more Intel cards like the HD series and GMA 945 and above series. They compile and make unique codes that not only increases VRAM and Memory Allocation but also making it more stable and more powerful. These modders make these, archive it, and then allow the public to download it. They are not payed for it nor supported for it (in fact, a lot of people are demanding more and more modded drivers.) once downloaded, they contain a simple setup.exe that will guide you through the installation of your new video driver. It's very easy, just uninstall the current video driver and it will install something named "Standard VGA Driver", after that, just run the setup and it will install the modded driver. Restart the computer and enjoy. But there's more to that, a standard GMA x3100 would have 384mb. But with a modded driver, you'd have something like 422mb (is read as 512mb on most softwares). And the results are beautiful, some examples are running Mount & Blade: Warband on DX7 mode, ALL HIGH, Max battle size, and Dynamic Lighting On. It has a steady 42 FPS on all areas, but drops to 21 FPS when approaching large parties on the battlefield. It was a major performance overhaul, and it's safer than over-clocking.
Second, let's have what we call the "Software Vertex Processing Mode" or SVP. When Intel was testing the Integrated Cards, they found out that some games works best and performs best with SVP, therefore they added SVP on the games they tested in the registry. But what they don't know, is that SVP works best on MOST games, usually source engine games like HL2, TF2, and CSS. A test on the x3100 found that using SVP on most games would increase its FPS by a LOT. There are 2 processing modes, Hardware is the most common, while software is usually activated by a 3rd party program. The Intel Display Adapter Management Tool is one great way to switch from hardware to software on any program and etc. On Mount & Blade: Warband, Hardware mode gives an FPS of 36 usually, even with the modded driver, and enabling Dynamic Lighting will make it worse. And with Software, it gives 42 FPS, even with Dynamic Lighting. So we came to the conclusion. Factory settings might not work as much as you would expect, but as the motto "For gamers, By gamers" imply.. We are all helping each other to give the best performance to anyone brave enough to take the risk. These are the building blocks of every gamer out there, we will go to the limit just to maximize our gaming experience. Even the low-spec users.. and as a Low-spec user, i have spent nearly 3 years to get the best performance on my games, i have tested various games and i could say that i am more than satisfied with the rig i have. You don't need fancy rigs to become a gamer, just enjoy the game with passion and you will be infused with the spirit of gaming, of course, it depends if you're more of an Eye Candy person, who loves great graphics and effects. But, always remember that great graphics don't make great games. We need to balance the graphics and the gameplay. Just enjoy what you do and play. Even if you're with a low-spec intel gfx that people usually butt hurt, there are tons of games out there that needs attention, and most of those doesn't need a high-end pc.
